Wind farm team produce virtual STEM presentation for schools

The Galloper Wind Farm team in Essex have created and launched a virtual STEM presentation that can be safely delivered to pupils during the Covid pandemic. The presentation, which focuses on the Galloper Wind Farm and careers in the renewable energy industry, has been designed for secondary age pupils.

The project team have long been supportive of education and career initiatives, delivering STEM workshops in local schools, participating in school career open days, and taking part in the East Coast Energy Internship scheme in previous years. In 2019 the Galloper apprenticeship scheme was launched which saw three, young, local people securing professional apprenticeships on the project. Working in partnership with East Coast College the four year training scheme will enable them to achieve an Engineering Technician Level 3 qualification as well work hands-on at the wind farm. During construction of the £1.5 billion project 700 jobs were created, with 60 long-term jobs created during the operational phase.

Kieron Drew, the project’s interim Operation & Maintenance Manager, who delivered the voiceover for the presentation said: “As a project team we have always been passionate about raising awareness of the renewable energy industry and supporting young people in the local community. Normally this has taken the form of being able to go into schools to give presentations in person or attend careers days, but under the current circumstances that just isn’t possible. Therefore we decided to get creative. We’ve produced this fantastic presentation, with a voiceover across each slide, so the pupils get as close to a normal presentation experience as possible.”

The Galloper school presentation is completely free and can be sent to schools, colleges and learning establishments upon request. It gives an introduction to the offshore wind industry and its history, the Galloper wind farm project, offshore wind farm technology, and information on careers in the renewables sector. Galloper Offshore Wind Farm is a 353MW project located 27km off the coast of Suffolk. The estimated average annual generation expected at the site is equivalent to the approximate domestic needs of more than 380,000 average UK households.1 The Galloper purpose-built, state of the art Operations & Maintenance Base, is in Harwich International Port and opened in 2019. It will support the wind farm for its anticipated operational life-time of twenty plus years.

 1 – Energy predicted to be generated is derived using wind speeds monitored in the local area and correlating to historical weather data providing longer term data. The calculations are based on an installed capacity of  353 MW.  The energy capture predicted and hence derived homes equivalent or emissions savings figures may change as operational data are gathered. Equivalent homes supplied is based on an annual electricity consumption per home of 4100 kWh. This figure is supported by recent domestic electricity consumption data available from The Digest of UK Energy Statistics and household figures from the UK National Statistics Authority.
