In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week 2025, step into the world of offshore wind with Galloper’s current apprentice, George Webb! Hear first-hand about his journey through the RWE Wind Turbine Technician apprenticeship programme and his incredible experiences at Galloper Wind Farm.
“Before starting my RWE apprenticeship in September 2022, I studied at Harwich School and later at Colchester Institute, where I dived into mechanical and electrical engineering, along with welding and fabrication. I’ve always been drawn to practical, hands-on work, and these subjects sparked my interest in engineering.
After my studies, I landed exciting roles as a vintage aircraft engineer at both Clacton and Duxford airfields. Working on classic planes was an amazing experience and confirmed that I wanted a career where I could be hands-on every day.
The wind industry is booming, with a bright future ahead, so when I spotted the RWE apprenticeship opportunity, I knew I had to go for it. Now, I’m proud to be part of this dynamic and growing sector!
Three years into my apprenticeship, I’m loving every moment. The balance between college-based learning and real-world application is fantastic. From mechanical and electrical engineering to fabrication, and even in-depth Health and Safety training, every day presents new challenges—and rewards.
RWE is a great employer that genuinely cares about its employees. Their support has been invaluable throughout my apprenticeship, ensuring a strong foundation for my future career. The first two years were spent mostly in college, earning my NVQ Wind Turbine Technician qualification, with hands-on training during term breaks at Galloper. Now in my third year, I’m fully based on-site, working alongside experienced technicians and getting hands-on with the turbines.
The RWE apprenticeship is an incredible opportunity. It covers travel expenses, accommodation, and a great salary, but the real highlight is the team. The skills I’m developing, the knowledge I’m gaining, and the day to day with colleagues make every day exciting and fulfilling. I genuinely feel like a valued part of the team.
Looking ahead, I’m focused on completing my apprenticeship and building a long-term career in the wind industry. In five years, I see myself as an experienced Wind Turbine Technician, and in ten, I’m aiming for a Senior Technician role. Galloper already feels like home, and I plan to be here for the long run!
