Jackson Civil Engineering

Jackson Civil Engineering is a regionally structured civil engineering firm with national capabilities and a wide experience across numerous sectors. Headquartered in Ipswich, the company was founded in 1952 as a public works contractor, it now operates out of seven offices across England, employing around 300 staff. At any one time, the company may have as many as 50 live jobs, from as far north as Yorkshire, all the way down to the south coast.

Economic impact: For the work on Galloper’s operations & maintenance base, around 80% of Jackson’s sub-contractors, workforce and major material suppliers were located within a 50 mile radius from Harwich, all within the region.

Employment impacts: Jackson Civil Engineering along with the other two main O&M base contractors – RG Carter Southern Ltd, who designed and are building the facility and Farrans Construction, who designed and will fabricate and install the pontoon – are expected to create around 120 local direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase.

Training and development: Jackson sees investment in the training and development of staff as key to both existing activities and the future stability of the business. For example, apprentices on training schemes UK-wide currently make up 8% of the workforce. Jackson is committed to up-skilling current staff and in the past three years has enabled 49 National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) as part of an ongoing programme to upgrade Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards. These NVQs range from management to construction and plant level. In 2018, the company launched a ‘Trainee Foreman’ scheme, with eight employees identified for additional training, mentoring and development.
